" We still shudder at the Judgement at the prospect of stoning a nursing mot=
her to death, in 21st century Nigeria, because she was found guilty of commi=
tting adultery by a Sharia court in Sokoto state=2E No! A human life should =
not be wasted in this manner=2E Let Safiya Hussaini live!

We at Multmedia Centre for Democracy, an NGO based in Abuja, decry Safiya's =
sentence in its entirety=2E We respect the right of people to their religion=
=2E Also, we respect the right of people to live=2E Human life is sacred and=
 indeed should come before any other consideration=2E
In this regard, we see Safiya's condemnation to death by stoning as a negati=
on of the very purpose of human life=2E Safiya is entitled to her fundamenta=
l human rights among which are the right to life and freedom of choice=2E To=
 carry out such an action in a civilised and multi-religious Nigeria, will b=
e doing irredeemable damage to the image of Nigeria, which has already suffe=
red a great deal in the recent past especially under military regime=2E Sinc=
e democracy set in, a lot of resources and time have been spent trying to re=
build the country's battered image=2E If execution of Safiya, and such-like =
judgements are carried out under a democratic regime, then the national imag=
e will be dragged down again=2E In fact, even under the military, such evil =
was not allowed=2E

Nigeria is not just the giant of Africa, but a pace-setter in the Black worl=
d=2E The nation needs to be careful about setting a bad precedence=2E We can=
not be seen as a nation and a people without value for human life=2E We don'=
t want to be seen as another Afghanistan where women are dragged to the stad=
ium and executed brutally=2E It is the most horrifying prospect to think tha=
t such a thing could happen in Nigeria=2E It is undemocratic and it is retro=
gressive=2E
Sokoto State has a rich and admirable history which is respected world-over=2E=
 The people are good and respect human life=2E We do not believe that it is =
the wish of the Sokoto People to dent this image=2E We therefore call on the=
 good people of Sokoto State and the good people of Nigeria to raise their v=
oices against this grievous error, which is bound to cause untold damage to =
our name, our reputation and our future progress=2E

We particularly call on the government of Sokoto State to reverse this judge=
ment=2E This is not about politics, monopoly of knowledge or ego=2E It is al=
l about human life=2E We make this call based on our joint humanity =2E We a=
re all joined together in one long chain of life=2E Today, it is Safiya, tom=
orrow it could be our wives, mothers or sisters=2E

Please spare Safiya's life=2E "
