Macedonian women united for peace
March 23, 2001
In the midst of armed conflict in Macedonia, the Union of Women Organization
of the Republic of Macedonia has launched not a call to arms but rather a
call for "peace, dialogue, cooperation and love". This declaration
proposes
an alternative to the escalating violent solutions and favors concerted
dialogue between the different peoples of Macedonia. To this end, every day
at 4 p.m., the women of this "multi-nationality" NGO are gathering
in
Macedonia Square for a 15-minute silent protest for peace.
A petition for peace is being circulated and has gathered many signatures.

Taking action to counteract sexism in the media and advertising
March 15, 2001
An action by Brussels feminists on International Women's Day used humour to
draw attention to the vicious sexism and gender bias flourishing in the
media.
At a rally entitled 'Does a woman have to get undressed for the media to
cover her?', the action group "Women for a better future within ten days"
referred to the fact the less women are covered, the better coverage the
media gives them. The mobilising of 35 000 (fully-clothed) women for the
European World March of Women against poverty and violence received marginal
treatment from the media, while the advertising campaign from a
multinational clothes company (H&M) showing a top-model in a bikini and
with
a blank expression, caught the attention of both media and the public.
The main rules of the misogynist, male-dominated mainstream media seem
to be
that 1) women should basically not be visible at all, and 2) if at times
they are allowed into the media, it should be as seductive, sexual objects.
Why is the action group called "Women for a better future within ten days"?
According to one member it is "Because the bomb is set to go off in ten
days". Clearly feminists are losing patience with the flagrant sexism in
media and demand the democratisation of public space and of communications.

Rapes condemned as war crimes by UN tribunal
March 8, 2001
The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia has confirmed
that rapes committed in Bosnia were war crimes, condemning three
Serbians to
prison terms of up to 28 years. Dragoljub Kunarac, Radomir Kovac and Zoran
Vukovic were among the Serbian troops who used rape as an "instrument of
terror" in the village of Foca during the war in Bosnia (1992-1995). Women's
groups and Amnesty International welcomed the decision by Zambian judge
Florence Mumba.

Croatians cry for justice
Feb 27, 2001
More than 10,000 protesters flooded through the streets of Zagreb on
February 19th in a call for a democratic and fair government. Their main
demand: that all citizens be equal before the law, including war criminals
like Mirko Norac.

Les Macédoniennes pour la paix
Mars 23, 2001 L'Union des femmes de la République de Macédoine
(UWOM)
appelle " à la paix, au dialogue, à la coopération
et à l'amour " plutôt
qu'à la prise d'armes. Cette déclaration, en pleine guerre, vient
contrecarrer toute approche de résolution de conflits par la violence
et
préconise le dialogue concerté entre les peuples de Macédoine.
Ainsi, tous
les jours à 16h, les femmes de cette ONG " multinationale "
proposent 15
minutes de silence au square Macédoine.
La pétition pour la paix, quant à elle, continue de circuler et
de recevoir
de multiples signatures.

Agir contre le sexisme dans les médias et les communications
Mars 15, 2001 Une action féministe à Bruxelles a utilisé
l'humour pour
attirer l'attention sur le sexisme et la misogynie qui fleurissent dans les
médias. Une manifestation organisée par le groupe contestataire
Femmes
pour un
Avenir Meilleur dans les 10 jours se déroulait sous le thème "Faut-il
qu'une femme soit dévêtue pour qu'on parle d'elle?". Le slogan
se réfère au
fait que la mobilisation de 35 000 femmes européennes (habillées)
pour un
défilé pacifique dans le cadre de la Marche mondiale des femmes
a reçu un
traitement extrêmement marginal de la part des médias, tandis qu'une
top-modèle en bikini, le regard vide, figurant dans des annonces pour
une
compagnie de vêtements a attiré l'attention des médias et
du public.
On dirait que les règles du jeu pour les médias de masse, milieu
misogyne et
largement dominé par les hommes sont 1) les femmes ne devraient pas paraître
du tout, et 2) si parfois on les fait rentrer dans les médias, il faudrait
que ce soit sous l'angle de la séduction, comme des objets sexuels. À
la
question 'pourquoi le nom Femmes pour un Avenir Meilleur dans les 10
jours', une membre a répondu, sourire en coin, que c'est "parce
que la bombe
est prévue pour dans 10 jours." Manifestement, les féministes
sont à
bout de
patience à l'égard du sexisme flagrant des médias et demandent
la
démocratisation de l'espace publique et des communications.

Viols comme armes de guerre punis à La Haye
Mars 8, 2001 Le Tribunal pénal international a ouvertement décidé
de juger
les viols comme des crimes contre l'humanité. Ainsi trois Serbes ont
été
condamnés à des peines d'emprisonnement allant jusqu'à
28 ans. Dragoljub
Kunarac, Radomir Kovac et Zoran Vukovic faisaient partie des troupes serbes
qui utilisaient le viol comme « instrument de terreur » dans le
village de
Foca pendant la guerre de Bosnie de 1992 à 1995. De nombreuses associations
de femmes, ainsi qu'Amnesty international ont accueilli avec soulagement le
verdict de la Juge zambienne, Florence Mumba.

Les Croates réclament justice
Fevrier 27, 2001 Le 19 février dernier, une impressionnante manifestation,
réunissant plus de 10000 personnes a déferlé dans les rues
de Zaghreb. Les
participants marchaient pour obtenir la démocratie et un gouvernement
juste.
La principale revendication réclamait l'égalité des citoyens
devant la loi
et en particulier pour les criminels de guerre comme Mirko Norac.

LE BOUCHE À OREILLE...LA CLÉ DU RECRUTEMENT DES FEMMES DANS LES
PROGRAMMES DE FORMATION EN TI - Les difficultés de recrutement
des étudiantes dans les différentes formations reliées
aux
sciences et aux technologies font désormais partie des évidences
sur lesquelles il faut malheureusement compter. Ces problèmes
sont en outre appuyés par des statistiques d'inscription
accablantes. C'est pourquoi, il était apparu tout à fait
remarquable, il y a quelques années, que plus de la moitié des
étudiants gradués (60 %) du baccalauréat en programmation
de
systèmes d'information de l'Université St-Francis Xavier
(Antigonish, Nouvelle-Écosse) étaient en fait... des étudiantes!
Le haut taux de placement de ces finissants, avait à l'époque
rendu ce programme très populaire auprès des universitaires des
deux sexes. Pourtant, depuis lors, le pourcentage de femmes
inscrites au programme a chuté, les étudiantes ne représentant
plus que le quart de l'ensemble des inscrits. Les
administrateurs de l'Université entendent mettre en oeuvre
plusieurs actions pour attirer les femmes en plus grand nombre,
et hausser leur pourcentage d'inscriptions au moins jusqu'à ce
qu'il atteigne 30 %.
Bien que relativement faible, ce pourcentage serait en outre
supérieur à la moyenne nationale d'inscriptions des femmes dans
les programmes d'informatique universitaires, celle-ci se
situant plutôt entre 15 et 20 % selon la Canadian Information
Processing Society (CIPS), une association qui représente les
professionnels en TI. Pour Faye West, la présidente de
l'organisation, cette faible représentation féminine dans les
formations technologiques est un problème à résoudre puisque,
en
boudant les programmes de sciences et technologies, les femmes
se privent de merveilleuses opportunités de carrières. Dans le
but de stimuler l'intérêt des jeunes femmes, CIPS a organisé
plusieurs événements, notamment une journée entière
de
conférences données par des femmes de l'industrie des TI. Le
principal but poursuivi est de briser l'image stéréotypée
du
travailleur en TI, image qui le présente travaillant seul devant
une machine à longueur de journée, pour en élargir le spectre
et
la rendre attrayante.
À l'Université St-Francis Xavier, Lisa Mullin - professeure
assistante au Département d'informatique - a sondé tous les
étudiants du Département pour tenter de mettre au jour ce qui
pourrait motiver les femmes à s'engager sur la voie d'une
carrière technologique. Elle a ainsi découvert que c'est souvent
le fait d'avoir eu un contact personnel - avec un étudiant ou un
membre du personnel du programme - qui incite les femmes à s'y
inscrire. Au-delà de campagnes de séduction massives, le
principal facteur d'attraction des étudiantes pourrait donc être
le bon vieux bouche à oreille. Toujours selon l'étude de Mullin,
le travail d'équipe joue lui aussi un rôle de catalyseur, les
femmes recherchant les contacts humains et ne souhaitant pas
travailler de façon isolée. Enfin, si le haut taux d'embauche
paraît aussi attrayant pour tous les étudiants, les hommes se
montrent cependant plus intéressés que leurs collègues
féminines
par les salaires élevés qui les attendent une fois les portes
de
l'université franchies.

I am sure you have already seen news items regarding the serious assaults by
Catholic priests on sisters in many countries. While
the news has focused on such attacks in Africa, linking them to the fear among
priests of contracting AIDS, the fact is that many in
the Catholic community have been aware for quite some time of sexual abuse of
nuns by priests in many parts
of the world for many reasons. If you want to read more about this, we refer

The National Catholic Reporter in the US was the first news
agency to publish this story.
Let me share just one story from the confidential report of a sister who provided
the information to the Vatican: " I gave one example
of a priest who brought a sister [with whom he had had sexual relations] for
an abortion. She died during the procedure and the
priest officiated at the requiem Mass."
The Catholics for a Free Choice office has been deluged with calls from both
Catholic women and secular feminists wanting to
know what they can do to express their solidarity with women who have survived
such abuse, and their
appropriate anger and outrage such abuses as well as to press Catholic institutional
leaders for both immediate action that would
eliminate such abuse as well as long term change in church positions and attitudes
toward sexuality and women that contribute to
such deep denigration of women.
In collaboration with the Fund for A Feminist Majority, Catholics for a Free
Choice is in the early stages of planning a
response/action against these outrages.

DEFENDING HUMAN RIGHTS.
Do you think you have what it takes to spend over one year abroad
defending human rights? Peace Brigades International (PBI) is an
innovative peace and human rights organisation committed to the
non-violent resolution of conflicts and defence of human rights. On the
19th 22nd April 2001, PBI are organising an "Orientation Weekend"
at the
YMCA Indian Student Hostel, London. They are seeking individuals over the
age of 25, who are prepared to go to Colombia, Mexico or Indonesia and
partake in the "protective accompaniment" of threatened human rights
organisations.
Volunteering for PBI is a "once in a lifetime" opportunity with many
challenges. They include a fluency in the language of the country you
want to go to and a minimum commitment of a year. The weekend is part of
the necessary process of becoming a human rights volunteer for PBI. One
has to adhere to the principles of PBI namely non-violence,
non-partisanship and the defence and promotion of human rights.
The weekend will give you an introduction to the structure, mandate,
principles and objectives of PBI. Conflict situations will be studied and
non-violent conflict resolution methods will be analysed. Consensus
decision-making skills will be developed and a clearer understanding of
day-to-day life in the field will be gained. The subtleties of
cross-cultural communication and the principles of non-partisanship will
also be assessed. It is a well-organised and successful event with
professional facilitators and interactive exercises.
The year abroad puts individuals on the "front line" of the defence
of
human rights, it will give you the unique opportunity to actually
participate at the grass roots level with threatened human rights
organisations who have requested an international presence. PBI's
objective is to create a "space for peace" in conflict zones, so that
the
civilian population may organise to defend its rights without fear of
reprisals and violence.

la plate-forme de Pékin, processus appelé "Beijing+5 ;
- l'arrive de la Marche mondiale des femmes le 17 octobre ou 200 d'entre
elles ont rencontré Kofi Annan, Secrétaire général
des Nations Unies pour
lui remettre les millions de signatures qui appuient les 17 revendications
de cette marche
Laurence Vale a recueilli les témoignages à l'extérieur
de l'ONU auprès
d'une vingtaines de femmes de tous pays, de tous âges , toutes couleurs,
d'appartenances politiques et religieuses diverses....
Toutes disent leurs attentes et leurs motivations et dénoncent la violation
des droits humains les plus élémentaires et l'incroyable difficult
partout
dans le monde, encore aujourd'hui, qu'ont les femmes à exister.
Deux questions sous-entendent cette réalisation : que s'est-il passé
depuis
les décisions pries lors de la conférence de Bejing en 1995 et
qu'elle est
l'incidence de ces réunions sur la vie des femmes ?
